Hygienist was so good with our little one. Let him explore the tools. Didn’t force anything that he didn’t want to do. Was able to polish and floss his teeth. Dentist was good about talking about his teeth and painting on the fluoride

What Are
Dental Fillings?
A dental filling is one of the most common types of dental restoration, used to repair a tooth damaged by decay, wear, or a minor crack. During a cavity filling, we remove the decayed portion of the tooth and rebuild the space with a durable, tooth-coloured material that restores the tooth’s shape, strength, and function.
Fillings aren’t only for new cavities. If you have an older filling that’s worn down, cracked, or come loose, we can place a replacement filling to protect the tooth. When damage is too extensive for a filling to repair, we may recommend a dental crown instead. That’s the main difference between a filling and a crown: a filling repairs part of the tooth, while a crown covers and protects the whole tooth.
Types of Dental Fillings We Offer
Amalgam Fillings
Dental amalgam combines metals such as silver, mercury, tin, and copper into a strong, durable filling material. It has long been used in restorative dentistry and is well suited to back teeth, where chewing forces are greatest.
- Highly resistant to wear and suited to any chewing surface. With proper care, amalgam fillings are designed to hold up well over time.
- A straightforward, dependable material to place. It does not shrink over time, which helps the filling keep its shape and fit.
Composite (Tooth-Coloured) Fillings
At Westgate Dental & Implant Centre, we use premium composite filling materials from 3M and Dentsply Sirona for our composite fillings in Maple Ridge. Composite resin is made to closely match your natural tooth colour, making it a popular choice for patients who want a more aesthetic result.
- Compared to standard filling materials, our premium composites offer greater strength, better resistance to staining, and a stronger bond to the natural tooth.
- Composite resin bonds directly to the remaining tooth structure, which helps support what’s left of the natural tooth. Because it’s tooth-coloured, a white dental filling blends naturally with the rest of your smile.
Gold Fillings
Gold restorations are valued for their durability, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Made from dental gold alloys, they can be a long-lasting option, particularly for back teeth that are exposed to significant chewing forces.
- Resistant to wear and corrosion, and well suited to teeth that handle high chewing pressure.
- Gold’s biocompatibility means a lower risk of allergic reaction or irritation for most patients. It also holds its shape well over time, helping maintain a consistent fit.
Porcelain Fillings
Porcelain is a type of dental ceramic commonly used for tooth-coloured restorations, including inlays and onlays. It offers excellent aesthetics and can be a suitable option when both function and appearance are important.
- Custom-matched to your natural tooth colour for a more seamless look.
- Resistant to staining and durable enough to withstand normal biting forces, offering a more natural appearance compared to metal fillings.
Signs You May Need a
Dental Filling
It isn’t always obvious when a tooth needs treatment. Watch for these common signs of tooth decay:
- Sharp or lingering sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
- A visible dark spot, pit, or hole on the tooth’s surface
- A rough edge or spot where floss keeps catching
- Pain when biting down or chewing
- A cracked, chipped, or fractured tooth
- Food that keeps getting stuck in the same spot
A cracked or fractured tooth doesn’t always need a crown or extraction. In many cases, cracked tooth repair can be completed with a simple filling, especially when the damage is caught early. Our CareStream intraoral camera lets us show you exactly what we see, so you understand what’s happening in your mouth before we recommend treatment.
What to Expect During Your Dental Filling Appointment
Initial Examination and Diagnosis
We start by reviewing your dental history and taking digital X-rays, bringing in CBCT imaging for more complex cases. Our CareStream intraoral camera lets us show you the affected area on screen, so you can see exactly what we’re treating.
Anesthesia and Tooth Preparation
Before we begin, we apply a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding tissue so you stay comfortable throughout the procedure. Once the area is numb, we carefully remove the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth and clean the area to prepare it for the filling material.
Filling Placement
With the tooth prepared, we place your composite filling in layers, hardening each layer with a curing light. This layering process allows for precise shaping and a strong bond to the surrounding enamel.
Finishing and Polishing
Once the filling is in place, we check your bite to make sure it doesn’t interfere with normal chewing or speaking. We then polish the filling smooth, which helps prevent bacteria buildup and keeps the surface comfortable.
Post-Procedure Care
You’ll receive clear aftercare instructions, including guidance on avoiding sticky or hard foods for the first day or so. Some post-filling sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure is normal for a short period, and we’ll schedule a follow-up if needed to make sure everything is settling well.
Is Getting a Dental Filling
Painful?
Most patients feel little to no pain during a filling. We numb the area with a local anesthetic before starting, so you’ll feel pressure or vibration rather than pain. Some mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure is normal for a few days afterward as the tooth settles.
If dental anxiety makes you nervous, let us know. We work at your pace and can discuss options like sedation to help you feel more comfortable throughout treatment.
How Long Does a Filling
Appointment Take?
Most composite or amalgam fillings take about 30 to 60 minutes in a single visit. Gold or porcelain restorations typically require two visits, since the restoration is custom-fabricated between appointments.
If you require fillings on multiple teeth, we can often treat them in the same visit, which may extend your appointment. Your dentist will give you a more specific time estimate once they’ve assessed the tooth during your exam.
Benefits of Treating
Cavities Early
Restores Tooth Function
Repairing decay with a filling restores your tooth’s ability to withstand normal biting and chewing, while preserving as much of your natural tooth structure as possible.
Helps Prevent Further Decay
A filling seals the cavity, helping to keep bacteria out and stop decay from spreading further into the tooth.
Improves Aesthetics
Tooth-coloured composite fillings blend naturally with your smile, so your restoration isn’t obvious to others.
A Cost-Effective Restorative Option
Compared to more involved procedures like crowns or larger restorations, treating a cavity early with a filling is often a simpler, less invasive option.
Suitable for All Ages
Fillings address tooth decay in both baby teeth and permanent teeth, making them a routine part of family dental care.

Dental Filling FAQs
Does getting a filling hurt?
No, most patients feel little to no pain. We numb the tooth with a local anesthetic before we begin, so you’ll feel pressure rather than pain during treatment. Mild sensitivity for a day or two afterward is normal.
How long does a dental filling take?
Most fillings take between 30 and 60 minutes per tooth, including numbing and finishing. If you need more than one filling, we can often complete them in the same visit.
How do dentists determine whether I need a filling?
We combine a visual exam with digital X-rays and CBCT imaging when needed to check for decay, cracks, or weakened tooth structure. Our CareStream intraoral camera lets us show you the affected area, giving you a clear look at what we’re recommending treatment for.
Can a cavity heal without a filling?
Very early, small areas of demineralization can sometimes be managed with fluoride and better oral hygiene, but a true cavity, where the tooth structure has already broken down, won’t heal on its own and needs a filling or other restorative treatment. Left untreated, decay usually continues to spread.
What foods should I avoid after getting a dental filling?
After your cavity filling, avoid sticky or hard foods such as caramel, chewing gum, nuts, and hard candies, as these can dislodge or damage the filling. If you’re experiencing sensitivity, avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks, stick to softer foods, and try biting on the opposite side of your mouth for the first 24 hours.
Does smoking affect the longevity of fillings?
Yes, particularly for composite fillings. The chemicals in tobacco can cause the material to stain and wear faster over time. Smoking also contributes to gum disease and decay, which can affect the health of the teeth around any filling.
