Most people are not fans of dental visits. That was me! But I actually look forward to the smiling, friendly staff at Westgate Dental! My hygienist is efficient and does a great job. My teeth feel great after my appt. Front staff are professional and process your insurance etc right away. And they explain my carrier's coverage w/ patience and a smile!

Our Dental Crown Procedure
Step 1: Dental Examination and Tooth Preparation
We begin by examining the tooth and surrounding structures, using X-rays and, when clinically indicated, CBCT imaging to evaluate the tooth and supporting bone. If a crown is needed, we prepare the tooth by reshaping it and removing any decayed or damaged areas.
Step 2: Digital Dental Impressions
Using CEREC and iTero digital scanning, we capture a precise digital impression of your prepared tooth. This helps us design a custom crown that fits your bite accurately.
Step 3: Temporary Crown Placement
While your permanent crown is being made, we place a temporary crown to protect the tooth. This usually takes about two to three weeks, and the temporary crown allows you to eat and speak normally in the meantime.
Step 4: Final Crown Fitting and Cementation
At your next visit, we remove the temporary crown and check the fit, shape, colour, and bite of your permanent crown. Once everything feels right, we secure it in place with dental cement.

Is getting a dental crown painful?
Getting a crown is usually painless. We numb the area with local anesthetic during preparation to ensure your comfort. The process may cause some pressure, but it should not hurt. After the anesthetic wears off, you may feel mild sensitivity or soreness, especially if the crown was placed on a decayed tooth. This is usually temporary and can often be managed with over-the-counter pain relief if needed.
How do I care for my temporary crown until the permanent one arrives?
Temporary crowns need special care and are less durable than permanent crowns.
- Avoid chewing gum, caramel, nuts, and ice, which could damage your temporary crown.
- Avoid abrasive toothpaste and brush the restoration gently.
- Slide floss out from the side rather than lifting it out, to avoid dislodging the temporary crown.

What should I do if I experience sensitivity around my crowned tooth?
Mild sensitivity in the first few days after a procedure is normal and usually goes away as the area adjusts. Avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks, and use sensitive toothpaste in the meantime. If the sensitivity lasts or you feel sharp pain, contact our office.

Do you offer same-day dental crowns?
Our current process for permanent crowns involves two visits: an initial visit for preparation and digital impressions using CEREC and iTero scanning, followed by a second visit for your permanent crown once it’s ready. A temporary crown protects your tooth in between.

Lifespan varies depending on the material, your bite, and how well you care for it. Good oral hygiene, regular checkups, and addressing bruxism (such as wearing a night guard) can help support the long-term durability of your crown.
What should I do if my crown feels loose or falls off?
Contact our office as soon as possible. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth, and keep the crown safe if it comes out completely so we can assess whether it can be recemented or needs a crown replacement.
